RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) and persistent pollutants (POPs) are new pollutants that are extensively studied worldwide. To fill the gaps that the degradation processes and mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the surface of most MPs are still unclear, the photochemical transformation of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs and polystyrene (PS) MPs in water were investigated and compared. The photolysis of BaA on the surface of PS in water proceeded easier than that on PVC within the 48 h irradiation period, with the pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.0489 min-1 and 0.0181 min-1, respectively, which can be ascribed to the smaller particle size and more OH production of PS MPs. Due to the light competition between the chromophore and BaA as well as the light-shielding effect, aged MPs showed an inhibitory effect on the degradation of BaA compared with pristine MPs. For BaA/PVC MPs system, the degradation of BaA in real water was not significantly affected by coexisting ions and humic acid (HA) (p < 0.05), while slight inhibitory effect on the degradation of BaA appeared for PS MPs in different water matrices (UP: 86.97 %, YR: 84.47 %, PR: 81.42 % and HR: 83.21 %). According to the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, quenching experiment and probe experiment, the relative contribution of direct photolysis (PVC: 82.02 %; PS: 69.54 %) and indirect photolysis (PVC: 17.98 %; PS: 30.46 %) was confirmed. A total of 14 products were identified, and the product types were not affected by plastics aging. The results of the toxicity assessment indicated that although some intermediate products remained toxic to aquatic organisms, the toxicity of most products was lower than that of BaA. This study provides new insights into the environmental fate of PAHs and the role of MPs in the photolysis process of contaminants in surface water.

RESUMO

In this study, we found that alumina (Al2O3) may improve the degradation of phenolic pollutants by KMnO4 oxidation. In KMnO4/Al2O3 system, the removal efficiency of 2,4-Dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) was increased by 26.5%, and the apparent activation energy was decreased from 44.5 kJ/mol to 30.9 kJ/mol. The mechanism of Al2O3-catalytic was elucidated by electrochemical processes, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and theoretical analysis that the oxidation potential of MnO4- was improved from 0.46 V to 0.49 V. The improvement was attributed to the formation of coordination bonds between the O atoms in MnO4- and the empty P orbitals of the Al atoms in Al2O3 crystal leading to the even-more electron deficient state of MnO4-. The excellent reusability of Al2O3, the good performance on degradation of 2,4-DBP in real water, the satisfactory degradation of fixed-bed reactor, and the enhanced removal of 6 other phenolic pollutants demonstrated that the KMnO4/Al2O3 system has satisfactory potential industrial application value. This study offers evidence for the improvement of highly-efficient MnO4- oxidation systems.

RESUMO

In this work, the oxidation performance of a new ferrate(VI)/ferrihydrite (Fe(VI)/Fh) system was systematically explored to degrade efficiently six kinds of benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs). Fe(VI)/Fh system not only had a superior degradation capacity towards different BPs, but also exhibited higher reactivity over a pH range of 6.0-9.0. The second-order kinetic model successfully described the process of BP-4 degradation by heterogeneous Fh catalyzed Fe(VI) system (R2 = 0.93), and the presence of Fh could increase the BP-4 degradation rate by Fe(VI) by an order of magnitude (198 M-1·s-1 v.s. 14.2 M-1·s-1). Remarkably, there are higher utilization efficiency and potential of Fe(VI) in Fe(VI)/Fh system than in Fe(VI) alone system. Moreover, characterization and recycling experiments demonstrated that Fh achieved certain long-term running performance, and the residual Fe content of solution after clarifying process meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water. The contributions of reactive species could be ranked as Fe(V)/Fe(IV) > Fe(VI) > â€¢OH. Fe(IV)/Fe(V) were the dominant species for the enhanced removal in the Fe(VI)/Fh system, whose percentage contribution (72 %-36 %) were much higher than those in Fe(VI) alone system (5 %-17 %). However, the contribution of Fe(VI) in oxidizing BP-4 should not be underestimated (20 %-56 %). These findings reasonably exploit available Fh resources to reduce the relatively high cost of Fe(VI), which offers a proper strategies for efficient utilization of high-valent iron species and may be used as a highly-efficient and cost-effective BPs purification method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Acetaldehyde can accumulate in cells and form acetaldehyde-DNA adducts that result in digestive tract cancer development. Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) enzymatic activity is involved in this process. Here, we aimed to analyze the relationship between an ALDH2 gene polymorphism and the digestive tract cancer risk in the Hakka population in China. METHODS: This was a retrospective study, with the ALDH2 rs671 genotype and medical record information collected from all subjects. The relationships between these factors, including various blood cell parameters, and digestive tract cancer susceptibility were analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 307 cancer patients and 317 controls were included. The cancer patients had significantly higher percentages with a history of smoking and drinking alcohol, as well as an increased platelet to lymphocyte ratio and lower lymphocyte to monocyte ratio, compared with the controls. The ALDH2 rs671 genotype and allele distributions were significantly different between the cancer patients and controls. Logistic regression analysis showed that the ALDH2 G/A genotype (G/A vs. G/G) and A/A genotype (A/A vs. G/G) in the co-dominant mode were risk factors for digestive tract cancer susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS: ALDH2 rs671 G/A or A/A genotype carriers may have an increased risk of developing digestive tract cancers among the Hakka people.

RESUMO

Generally, the dynamic modulus and bending stiffness modulus are used to evaluate the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture, and they are also used as basic parameters for asphalt mixture design. Therefore, a study was conducted on changes in the dynamic modulus and bending stiffness modulus of hot-recycled asphalt mixture with high levels of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) under the influence of different factors: dosage of regenerant, curing temperature, and curing time. The performance of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) was first evaluated. Then, the hot-recycled asphalt mixture was adjusted and designed in order to conduct modulus experiments, composed of the dynamic modulus test and three-point bending test. Finally, the influencing factors were not only qualitatively but also quantitatively analyzed to clarify the change laws of the mechanical parameters of hot-recycled asphalt mixture. The results showed that the modulus of the recycled asphalt mixture first decreased, then increased, and then decreased with increasing dosage of regenerant. As the curing time or temperature increased, the modulus first decreased and then increased. In terms of the dynamic modulus of the hot-recycled asphalt mixture, the curing time had the greatest impact, followed by dosage of the regenerant and curing temperature. For bending stiffness modulus, the influence of dosage of the regenerant was the greatest, followed by curing time and curing temperature. For the bending stiffness modulus of hot-recycled asphalt mixture, the curing conditions had a greater influence compared with the dynamic modulus.

RESUMO

In this study, the catalytic performance of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (nα-Fe2O3) in the low-dose ferrate (Fe(VI)) system was systematically studied through the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Based on the established quadratic functions between nα-Fe2O3 amount and observed pseudo first-order rate constant (kobs), two linear correlation equations were offered to predict the optimum catalyst dosage and the maximum kobs at an applied Fe(VI) amount. Moreover, characterization and cycling experiments showed that nα-Fe2O3 has good stability and recyclability. According to the results of reactive species identification and quenching experiment and galvanic oxidation process, the catalytic mechanism was proposed that Fe(III) on the surface of nα-Fe2O3 may react with Fe(VI) to enhance the generation of highly reactive Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species, which rapidly extracted a single electron from PCP molecule for its further reaction. Besides, two possible PCP degradation pathways, i.e., single oxygen transfer mediated hydroxylation and single electron transfer initiated polymerization were proposed. The formation of coupling products that are prone to precipition and separation was largely improved. This study proved that nα-Fe2O3 can effectively catalyze PCP removal at low-dose Fe(VI), which provides some support for the application of Fe(VI) oxidation technology in water treatment in the context of low-carbon emissions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To identify the risk factors associated with rebleeding in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) patients from southern China. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 229 patients who underwent small bowel endoscopy in our hospital between 1 January 2018 and 1 December 2020. The clinical characteristics and risk factors related to rebleeding were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: Rebleeding patients were significantly older than non-rebleeding patients (53.0 ± 15.9 vs. 46.2 ± 17.8 years), had lower hemoglobin concentrations (89.2 ± 28.1 vs. 126.2 ± 25.1 g/L), and higher blood urea nitrogen concentrations (5.4 ± 2.6 vs. 4.5 ± 2.2 µmol/L), respectively. A higher percentage of rebleeding patients had diabetes mellitus (13.9% vs. 2.9%) and overt bleeding (70.4% vs. 38.6%), and required blood transfusions (43.1% vs. 8.0%), compared with non-rebleeding patients, respectively. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that drinking alcohol (odds ratio (OR): 9.27; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.35-63.78), anemia (OR: 17.38; 95% CI = 5.48-55.10), and blood transfusion (OR: 3.76; 95% CI = 1.04-13.56) increased the risk of rebleeding in OGIB patients. CONCLUSION: Our data suggested that OGIB patients who drink alcohol, have anemia, and require blood transfusion have an increased risk of rebleeding.

RESUMO

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been linked to the development of certain diseases. However, the relationship between PAH exposure and thyroid disorders remains unknown. We measured 10 of the most common hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) in the urine of thyroid nodular goiter (NG) patients, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients, and healthy controls by gas chromatography-triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). We found that the concentrations of 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-OH-FLU), 2-hydroxydibenzofuran (2-OH-DBF), and 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-OH-PHE) in the NG group, and of 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OH-NAP), 2-OH-DBF, and 1-OH-PHE in the PTC group were significantly higher than those in controls. In addition, participants in the high tertiles of 2-OH-FLU and 1-OH-PHE had higher risk of NG. Besides these two OH-PAHs, elevated risk of NG was observed in women in the high tertiles of 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OH-NAP), 2-OH-NAP, 2-OH-DBF, and 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-OH-FLU). Furthermore, participants in the high tertiles of seven OH-PAHs, namely, 1-OH-NAP, 2-OH-NAP, 2-OH-DBF, 2-OH-FLU, 3-OH-FLU, 3/9-hydroxyphenanthrene (3/9-OH-PHE), and 1-OH-PHE, had elevated risk of PTC, and females in these high tertiles had an even higher risk of PTC. Our findings suggest that PAH exposure may increase the risk of NG/PTC, and there may be a gender-specific effect of PAH exposure on the development of NG/PTC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recurrence of colorectal polyps is common and impacted by various factors. This study was performed to explore the association between lipid profiles and recurrence of colorectal polyps. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the lipid profiles of 435 patients who underwent colonoscopy with removal of colorectal polyps and assessed recurrence of polyps by follow-up colonoscopy. Multivariate regression logistic analysis was used to evaluate the association between lipid profiles and polyp recurrence. RESULTS: During the 1.5-year follow-up, recurrence of colorectal polyps was observed in 135 of 435 patients (30.34%). Patients with recurrent polyps showed a higher level of triglycerides (P = 0.006) and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.008) and apolipoprotein A1 (P = 0.033). The multivariate regression logistic model suggested that an elevated triglyceride level was an independent risk factor for polyp recurrence (odds ratio, 1.55; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-2.35; P = 0.039) in patients with advanced adenoma. CONCLUSIONS: Lipid profiles are associated with recurrence of colorectal polyps. An elevated triglyceride level is an independent risk predictor of polyp recurrence in patients with advanced adenoma.

RESUMO

Labrasol, as a non-ionic surfactant, can enhance the permeation and absorption of drugs, and is extensively used in topical, transdermal, and oral pharmaceutical preparations as an emulsifier and absorption enhancer. Recent studies in our laboratory have indicated that labrasol has a strong absorption enhancing effect on different types of drugs in vitro and in vivo. This study was performed to further elucidate the action mechanism of labrasol on the corneal penetration. In this research, the fluorescein sodium, a marker of passive paracellular transport of tight junction, was selected as the model drug to assess the effect of labrasol on in vitro corneal permeability. To investigate the continuous and real-time influence of labrasol on the membrane permeability and integrity, the Ussing chamber system was applied to monitor the electrophysiological parameters. And, furthermore, we elucidated the effect of labrasol on excised cornea at the molecular level by application of RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemical staining. The results indicated that labrasol obviously enhance the transcorneal permeability of fluorescein sodium, and the enhancement was realized by interacting with and down-regulating the associated proteins, such as F-actin, claudin-1 and ß-catenin, which were contributed to cell-cell connections, respectively.

RESUMO

Increased nurse-to-patient ratios are associated negatively with increased costs and positively with improved patient care and reduced nurse burnout rates. Thus, it is critical from a cost, patient safety, and nurse satisfaction perspective that nurses be utilized efficiently and effectively. To address this, we propose a stochastic programming formulation for nurse staffing that accounts for variability in the patient census and nurse absenteeism, day-to-day correlations among the patient census levels, and costs associated with three different classes of nursing personnel: unit, pool, and temporary nurses. The decisions to be made include: how many unit nurses to employ, how large a pool of cross-trained nurses to maintain, how to allocate the pool nurses on a daily basis, and how many temporary nurses to utilize daily. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve the resulting model. Preliminary results using data from a large university hospital suggest that the proposed model can save a four-unit pool hundreds of thousands of dollars annually as opposed to the crude heuristics the hospital currently employs.

RESUMO

Newly manufactured electronic devices are subject to different levels of potential defects existing among the initial parameter information of the devices. In this study, a characterization of electromagnetic relays that were operated at their optimal performance with appropriate and steady parameter values was performed to estimate the levels of their potential defects and to develop a lifetime prediction model. First, the initial parameter information value and stability were quantified to measure the performance of the electronics. In particular, the values of the initial parameter information were estimated using the probability-weighted average method, whereas the stability of the parameter information was determined by using the difference between the extrema and end points of the fitting curves for the initial parameter information. Second, a lifetime prediction model for small-sized samples was proposed on the basis of both measures. Finally, a model for the relationship of the initial contact resistance and stability over the lifetime of the sampled electromagnetic relays was proposed and verified. A comparison of the actual and predicted lifetimes of the relays revealed a 15.4% relative error, indicating that the lifetime of electronic devices can be predicted based on their initial parameter information.

RESUMO

Methods To investigate the safety and clinical significance of the method described in this study, we focused on 16 peritoneal dialysis patients with peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter malposition and blockage in whom nonsurgical reposition was ineffective, who received a local incision about 5 cm below hypogastrium PD catheter insertions under local anesthesia. Tissues were separated layer by layer, 1-cm incisions were performed on the peritoneum vertically and conventionally, and then the PD catheters were pulled. Adherent mesentery was separated and the PD catheters were freed and removed sufficiently. PD catheters were introduced into the Dow cavity using large introducing forceps, were loop-ligated and fixed using 3# silk thread, and then the ligation line was sutured to the peritoneum. The tissues were managed layer by layer and the skin was sutured. All patients were followed up for half a year. Results Sixteen cases of refractory PD catheter malposition and blockage were managed successfully, with an operative incision of 3 cm and an operation time of 40±13 minutes. The localized anesthesia was well tolerated, and there were five cases in which lidocaine at 5 mg was added during the operation; postoperative pain was slight and only three patients used analgesics at night. All patients were treated with coagulation hemostasis, and there was no transfusion. No malposition, leakage or blockage was found at follow-up at more than six months. Conclusion It is safe, simple, inexpensive and associated with fewer complications to correct refractory PD catheter malposition and blockage by loop ligature and fixation through a minilaparotomy of inserted hypogastrium PD catheters promptly.

RESUMO

Bjerkandera adusta (B. adusta) causes fungus-associated chronic cough. However, the inflammatory response is not yet fully understood. Recently, B. adusta was identified in Asian sand dust (ASD) aerosol. This study investigated the enhancing effects of ASD on B. adusta-induced lung inflammation. B. adusta was inactivated by formalin. ASD was heated to remove toxic organic substances. ICR mice were intratracheally instilled with saline, B. adusta 0.2 µg, or B. adusta 0.8 µg with or without heated ASD 0.1 mg (H-ASD), four times at 2-week intervals. Two in vitro experiments were conducted to investigate any enhancing effects using bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM) from Toll-like receptor (TLR) knockout mice and ICR mice. Co-exposure to H-ASD and B. adusta, especially at high doses, caused eosinophil infiltration, proliferation of goblet cells in the airway, and fibrous thickening of the subepithelial layer, and remarkable increases in expression of Th2 cytokines and eosinophil-related cytokine and chemokine expression in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. In the in vitro study using BMDM from wild-type, TLR2-/-, and TLR4-/- mice, the TLR-signaling pathway for cytokine production caused by B. adusta was predominantly TLR2 rather than TLR4. H-ASD increased the expression of NF-κB and cytokine production by B. adusta in BMDM from ICR mice. The results suggest that co-exposure to H-ASD and B. adusta caused aggravated lung eosinophilia via remarkable increases of pro-inflammatory mediators. The aggravation of inflammation may be related, at least in part, to the activation of the TLR2-NF-κB signaling pathway in antigen presenting cells by H-ASD.

RESUMO

Edge-preserving image smoothing is one of the fundamental tasks in the field of computer graphics and computer vision. Recently, L0 gradient minimization (LGM) has been proposed for this purpose. In contrast to the total variation (TV) model which employs the L1 norm of the image gradient, the LGM model adopts the L0 norm and yields much better results for the piecewise constant image. However, as an improvement of the total variation (TV) model, the LGM model also suffers, even more seriously, from the staircasing effect and is not robust to noise. In order to overcome these drawbacks, in this paper, we propose an improvement of the LGM model by prefiltering the image gradient and employing the L1 fidelity. The proposed improved LGM (ILGM) behaves robustly to noise and overcomes the staircasing artifact effectively. Experimental results show that the ILGM is promising as compared with the existing methods.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Realgar is widely used in combination with other herbs as Chinese patent medicine to treat a wide range of diseases in China. It is also a well known arsenical toxicant. Chronic arsenic poisoning events caused by long-term usage of realgar-containing medicines have been reported in literatures. Given to the paradoxical role of realgar, comprehensive outline of its usage status in Chinese patent medicine might provide basal data for evaluating its toxicology risks in populations. Unfortunately, the relevant information is limited. Also, a metabolic process after intake of realgar-containing medicine in humans is poorly understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Traditional Chinese Patent Medicine Prescription Database was reviewed to get the information on the usage status of realgar. Realgar powder was dissolved in different pH-value solutions (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11) to determine the soluble arsenic concentrations from realgar. Ten volunteers aged 24-26 years old were recruited to take four pills of Niu Huang Jie Du Pian (NHJDP), a very common Chinese patent medicine with realgar, to analyze the arsenic metabolism after exposure to realgar-containing medicine. The four pills were taken according to the medical instruction. Concentrations of soluble arsenic from realgar and urinary arsenic metabolites in humans were determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS: A total of 191 (2.25%) realgar-containing traditional Chinese patent medicines were obtained from the database, and almost 86.91% of them were for oral application. 73 (38.22%) medicines were found to be available for children. The mass fraction of arsenic in realgar-containing medicine ranged from 0.11% to 27.52%. According to medical instructions, the amount of average daily arsenic intake ranged from 0.47 to 2895.53mg. Nearly 86% medicines with daily intake of arsenic >10mg. Only inorganic arsenic (iAs) was detected from realgar in dissolution experiment and the levels of soluble iAs increased with pH values. After intake NHJDP, arsenic excretion in urine significantly increased, with a maximum excretion of iAs and monomethylarsonic acid at 6h post-ingestion and a peak excretion of dimethylarsinic acid at 9h post-ingestion. Arsenic methylation capacity was decreased after intake NHJDP. Females carried a more efficient arsenic methylation process than males. CONCLUSIONS: Realgar is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The arsenic solubility from realgar may be enhanced under alkaline conditions. The levels of urinary arsenic metabolites significantly increased while the arsenic methylation capacity significantly decreased after intaking realgar-containing medicine, which may suggest that a potential health hazard exists if people use arsenical medicines for long-term.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bjerkandera adusta (B. adusta) is one of the most important etiological fungi associated with chronic cough. However, precise details of the inflammatory response to exposure are not well understood yet. B. adusta was recently identified in Asian sand dust (ASD) aerosol. Therefore, in the present study the exacerbating effects of ASD on B. adusta-induced lung inflammation and B. adusta + ASD on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine lung eosinophilia were investigated using experimental mice. METHODS: In order to prepare testing samples, B. adusta obtained from ASD aerosol was inactivated by formalin and ASD collected from the atmosphere was heated to remove toxic organic substances (H-ASD). CD-1 mice were instilled intratracheally with 12 different samples prepared with various combinations of B. adusta, H-ASD, and OVA in a normal saline solution. The lung pathology, cytological profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and the levels of inflammatory cytokines/chemokines in BALF were investigated. RESULTS: H-ASD aggravated the lung eosinophilia induced by B. adusta alone, which also aggravated the lung eosinophilia induced by OVA. The mixture of OVA, H-ASD, and B. adusta caused serious fibrous thickening of the subepithelial layer, eosinophil infiltration, and proliferation of goblet cells in the airways along with remarkable increases of IL-13, eotaxin, IL-5, and MCP-3 in BALF. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study demonstrated that B. adusta isolated from ASD aerosol induces allergic lung diseases. H-ASD enhanced allergic reactions caused by OVA or B. adusta. RESUMO

The quality and quantity of toxic materials adsorbed onto Asian sand dust (ASD) are different based on dust source regions and passage routes. The aggravating effects of two ASDs (ASD1 and ASD2) transported from the source regions of Inner Mongolia and northeast China on lung eosinophilia were compared to clarify the role of toxic materials in ASD. The ASDs contained different amounts of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and ß-glucan (ASD1ASD2). CD-1 mice were instilled intratracheally with ASD1, ASD2 and/or ovalbumin (OVA) four times at 2-week intervals. ASD1 and ASD2 enhanced eosinophil recruitment induced by OVA in the submucosa of the airway, with goblet cell proliferation in the bronchial epithelium. ASD1 and ASD2 synergistically increased OVA-induced eosinophil-relevant cytokines interleukin-5 (IL-5), IL-13 (ASD1ASD2) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. ASD2 aggravating effects on lung eosinophilia were greater than ASD1. The role of LPS and ß-glucan in ASD2 on the production of pro-inflammatory mediators was assessed using in vitro bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) from wild type, Toll-like receptor 2-deficient (TLR2-/-), TLR4-/-, and MyD88-/- mice (on Balb/c background). ASD2-stimulated TLR2-/- BMDMs enhanced IL-6, IL-12, TNF-α, MCP-1 and MIP-1α secretion compared with ASD2-stimulated TLR4-/- BMDMs. Protein expression from ASD2-stimulated MyD88-/- BMDM were very low or undetectable. The in vitro results indicate that lung eosinophilia caused by ASD is TLR4 dependent. Therefore, the aggravation of OVA-related lung eosinophilia by ASD may be dependent on toxic substances derived from microbes, such as LPS, rather than SiO2.
